A historical meeting held on February 19th 2018 was led by His Excellency, President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, with the support of representatives of Guinee, ECOWAS, other African countries and the international community, in Lome. The Togolese dialogue ‘Lome 2018’ brought leaders of the opposition coalition, the government and the ruling party of President Faure Gnassingbe to ‘discuss a durable resolution of the crisis in Togo’. The meeting attendance was extended to civil society, traditional and religious leaders and clergy.

President Nana Addo urged for peace as wished Togolese people and everyone in the region. He declared having no preconceived solution to impose; instead, he calls Leaders and Togolese citizens to ‘sit together and find a compromise that would lead to durable peace in the country’. Both sides of the political aisles opposing each other, the coalition 14 and UNIR recognized the necessity of confidence and appeasement. A list of measures was published at the end of day one of the dialogue as follow: A decree of amnesty had been signed for the release of 45 out of 92 persons detained. 7 people imprisoned for the market fire riots case will appear before the court to be bailed out by February 21st.

Detained people from demonstrations would also have their cases examined by the justice system. Beyond those measures, it was revealed that the opposition party agreed to a suspension of demonstrations while the dialogue is ongoing. The government on the other hand decided to hold on to any further election initiative ‘until the dialogue and institutional reforms contained in the Rules of procedure’. Finally, both political sides clarified their views and points on the idea of 92 constitution return.
